Syrian artist uses Pokémon Go to showcase the harsh reality of life in a war zone


While the world stares intently at their respective smart devices, ever on the lookout for that elusive Pikachu, Syrian artist Khaled Akil has a different set of problems. Akil has taken the iconic Nintendo creatures and augmented them onto a backdrop of the grim realities of life in war-torn Syria. “The news of Syria in everywhere, and now the Pokemon Go game is trending,” Akil said. “The mix between these two made me wonder what it would be like to hunt for a Pokemon character among the rubble in Syria, and how a virtual game attracts more attention than the atrocities…
